Hardly anything here is bought without a date behind it.
A wedding with the date already set. Eid at the end of the month. A baby a fortnight old. The trade this shop belongs to marks its days in gold, so the year in here runs on other people’s calendars: sets assembled against a wedding, bangles bought in the weeks before Eid, a child’s first piece chosen by a grandmother.
The occasion changes the work. Some days are answered straight from the cabinet. Others call for a piece made to a photograph and quoted by weight, or for a set put aside on deposit until the date comes. The pages below say which is which, and when to start.
