When Eid comes near, this counter fills with givers: parents, grandparents, aunties with a list of small wrists. The gift is gold because gold keeps. It is chosen in the weeks before, worn long after the day, and never thrown out with the wrapping.
The Eid list runs small.
Small is not slight. Everything on it is the same 21 and 22 carat as the bridal cabinet, weighed on the same scale and priced at the day’s rate. Point at a piece and it goes on the pan in front of you.

Weeks out, the giving starts to shape the counter. Families come in together, the tray stays out, and most of what is bought is bought for someone else: a bangle for a child, a chain for a nephew, earrings for a daughter.
A lot of it is a child’s first gold. A grandparent chooses the bangle, the wrist is measured across the counter, and the piece is worn for the day then kept safe until it fits. Gold moves between grown hands too, sister to sister and son to mother, and it lands the same way everywhere: small, solid, meant to stay.

Chosen early, a piece can wait here on deposit until it is needed. We are closed Mondays. Every other day the counter is open until six.

Eid is the crowded season, not the only one.
